~ Growing demand for diapers brings LICF and Allied Foundation together to address an ongoing need for young Long Island families~
May 4, 2021; Mellville, NY/ Hauppauge, NY – Just before Mother’s Day, the Allied Foundation Diaper Bank held a special event in celebration of the arrival of 75,000 diapers and wipes generously gifted by SAR Family Fund at the Long Island Community Foundation (LICF). Together we are making a tangible impact by providing diapers and wipes free of charge to families who cannot afford them on Long Island. The diapers were acquired through The National Diaper Bank Network (NDBN) and will be distributed locally across Long Island through the Allied Foundation Diaper Bank and partner organizations.
Even before the COVID-19 crisis, approximately one in three U.S. families experienced diaper need, a public health issue exacerbated by the growing economic and unemployment crisis caused by the pandemic. Infants require up to 12 diapers a day and toddlers need about eight, making the cost as much as $80 per month, per child. The Allied Foundation Diaper Bank fills an important void in getting diapers to low-income families. Currently, the government does not recognize diapers as a basic need and therefore no program (not SNAP, WIC, or Medicaid) allocates dollars specifically for their purchase. Anytime there is an increase in the cost of material basic necessities, like diapers, it impacts people living in poverty, and those who lack the money necessary to meet their basic needs. We continue to advocate for the families we serve and appreciate the philanthropic support these gifts bring, to ensure we remain a reliable resource for the children and families we help each and every day.
Allied Foundation Executive Director Heather Edwards accepted the SAR Family Fund, donation and officially thanked David Okorn, Executive Director of Long Island Community Foundation, and Joseph Saggio, Partner of Flexible Systems for graciously donating their warehouse space for the diaper bank’s shipments, storage, and distribution.
“More parents are facing diaper need due to loss of employment or other hardship caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Children in low-income families are at the greatest risk of experiencing diaper need because many families cannot afford a sufficient supply for their babies. The diapers will provide much-needed relief to young families who struggle to afford enough diapers to keep their babies clean, dry, and healthy” said Heather Edwards, Executive Director.
“Without an adequate supply of diapers and limited resources to purchase them, families will be re-used or leave a soiled diaper on for longer periods of time that leave babies susceptible to painful rashes and infection that can ultimately lead to poor health outcomes. Clean, dry diapers are critical for ensuring good health“ explained Scott Svitek, MD, Chair, Allied Foundation Board and Partner, Allied Physicians Group.
“Long Islanders have always been there for one another, supporting our neighbors who are in need. The SAR Family Fund generously funded this initiative to ensure all families have access to diapers and wipes, an essential need for babies’ health and well-being”, said Okorn.
“We are proud to support the community and the Allied Foundation Diaper Bank in their efforts to end diaper need across Long Island. We join together to make an impact and bring resources, compassion, and hope to families,” said Saggio.
