The Long Island Unitarian Universalist Fund Awards $218,000 in Social Change Grants to Nonprofits

(Melville, August 15, 2019) – In two rounds of grants for 2019, the advisory committee of the Long Island Unitarian Universalist Fund (LIUUF) recently approved $218,000 in funding to 10 nonprofits.

For more than 26 years, LIUUF has awarded millions of dollars to nonprofits in Nassau and Suffolk counties to advance progressive social change.

“We are grateful for the generosity of the Unitarian Universalist Veatch Program at Shelter Rock that enables us to support grassroots organizing, leadership development, and community advocacy efforts,” says Sol Marie Alfonso Jones, LICF’s senior program officer. “This work is critical to protecting, empowering, and amplifying the voices of our neighbors who are often marginalized and overlooked.”

Child Abuse Prevention Center, $20,000 to reduce racial bias and inequity in Long Island schools’ approach to discipline.

Empire Justice Center, $20,000 for support of legal, legislative, and administrative advocacy to empower and protect the civil rights of immigrants and other vulnerable groups.

ERASE RACISM, $20,000 for support of an education equity initiative in Sewanhaka Central School District focused on parent and student organizing and leadership development.

Latino Justice PRLDEF, $25,000 for legal advocacy supporting Latino immigrants on Long Island.

LGBT Network, $20,000 to support the National Coming Out Day campaign to increase the number of LGBT- inclusive safe spaces.

Long Island Advocacy Center, $25,000 to train parents to advocate for quality education for their children.

Long Island Progressive Coalition, $20,000 advance climate equity legislation in New York State and increase electric vehicle use in Long Island municipalities.

NYS Census Equity Fund, $25,000 to pool statewide philanthropic resources to ensure an accurate and fair 2020 census.

OLA of Eastern Long Island, $23,000 to advocate for state and local policies that protect the rights of and benefit Latino immigrants on Long Island’s east end.

Planned Parenthood of Nassau County, $20,000 for a voter education and engagement project to raise awareness about reproductive rights.

The Long Island Unitarian Universalist Fund is a field-of-interest fund in the Long Island Community Foundation that promotes progressive social change. The fund was established by the Unitarian Universalist Veatch Program at Shelter Rock. Grants are made in response to competitive proposals received from Long Island nonprofit organizations. The proposals are reviewed by LICF staff and presented to an advisory committee, composed of members drawn from Unitarian Universalist congregations across Long Island.
