Hurricane Maria and Mexico Earthquake Disaster Relief

Hurricane Maria and Mexico Earthquake Disaster Relief

Hurricane Maria made landfall on Dominica on the evening of Monday, September 18th, as a Category 5 hurricane. With winds of over 150 miles-per-hour, Dominica saw mass destruction of resources on the island. After hitting Dominica, Maria was downgraded to a Category 4 hurricane, still predicted bring catastrophic damage to the areas affected. Maria hit Puerto Rico on Tuesday night, with heavy storms and flooding affecting the island later into the week. Once downgraded to a Category 3 hurricane, Maria went by the Dominican Republic and is anticipated to affect islands that saw damage from recent Hurricane Irma.

On Tuesday,September 19th, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Mexico, close to 400 miles away from the previous (September 7th) earthquake's epicenter. Over 300 people have died as a result of the 7.1 magnitude earthquake, leaving it as the deadliest earthquake in over thirty years. In addition to the destruction brought on by both earthquakes, Mexico is also facing severe damage from Hurricane Katia, a Category 1 storm which struck the east coast of Mexico two days after the 8.1 magnitude earthquake.

We’ve compiled a list of charities that we recommend and are helping to address this unprecedented need for humanitarian aid throughout the Caribbean and southeastern US.
